About Kirkintilloch's Initiative
East Dunbartonshire Council and NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde joined forces in 2001 to put together a regeneration package to revitalise Kirkintilloch and boost the local economy. The programme was developed in full consultation with the local community. An original masterplan of 14 projects was proposed. A major six week public consultation was carried out with every household in the area receiving a questionnaire. Initial results showed widespread support for the majority of the proposals.
KI continued consultation with community organisations and brought forward a revised set up proposals with increased funding in 2004.
As a direct result of consultation with local people a number of proposals were changed from the original masterplan. This includes:
- The Leisure Centre swimming pool, initially designed for 5 lanes, increased to 6 lanes
- The Arts and Cultural Centre being doubled in size and moved to the heart of the redeveloped leisure and business area at Southbank
- The position of the Kirkintilloch Link Road being moved to reduce its impact on local residents
- Proposals for the development of a supermarket at Woodhead Park being dropped
- Development of the Leisure Centre, the Link Road, Arts and Cultural Centre and Town Centre Regeneration identified as key priorities in the KI programme
KI will now deliver a £56 million regeneration package consisting of 11 key projects. It will bring an estimated 1000 jobs and 100 new businesses to the area.
The first of its flagship projects, the Leisure Centre, was opened to the public in July 2007. Detailed design and planning work continues on the other key projects. All projects are anticipated to be complete by 2015.
