19 Jun 2007
In just over five weeks’ time, the people of Kirkintilloch will be able to use the facilities at their brand new £7.6m leisure centre free of charge, as it is set to open its doors on Saturday 21 July.During the opening weekend, leisure centre staff will run a free programme of activities in the centre and in Woodhead Park giving visitors a chance to try out all that the centre has to offer. This programme will be published over coming weeks.
From Monday 23 July, families will be able to go swimming in the 25 metre pool, play badminton, football or tennis and older children and adults will be able to get fit in the 70 station, state-of-the-art Club Max gym.
Council Leader Rhondda Geekie is a board member of Kirkintilloch’s Initiative, the partnership between East Dunbartonshire Council and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde which delivered the much anticipated leisure centre.
She said, “I am really thrilled that we’ve reached this point and that the people of Kirkintilloch will have a first rate leisure facility right on their doorstep. The centre’s Club Max gym is kitted out with the most up-to-date equipment available on the market today and I hope that it proves as popular as the other newly refurbished gyms at the Leisuredrome and Allander Leisure.”
A number of events and activities from the Council’s annual summer programme for kids will also take place in the centre for the first time this year to encourage local youngsters to join in.
Councillor Amanda Stewart is the newly appointed Convener of the Connect Services Committee. She added, “The Council’s leisure team has laid on a packed summer of activities at the new centre so it should be a very busy place as young people take part in swimming lessons, football courses, badminton, trampolining and much more.
“I hope local people will make the very best use of the centre and everything it has to offer now and for years to come.”
Ahead of the official opening, a series of special preview visits have been organised for local schools, sports clubs, the centre’s neighbours and Councillors.
There will also be an Open Week from Monday 9 – Sunday 15 July 2007 from 10am-8pm for adults wishing to get a look at the Club Max gym and to discuss membership packages.
There will be lots more information coming out in the run-up to the centre opening.
