Major consultation on Woodhead park landscape
28 Aug 2006
Local people are being given the chance to shape the look of Woodhead Park as Kirkintilloch’s Initiative (KI) and East Dunbartonshire Council begin a consultation on landscaping proposals.KI and the Council have prepared a draft landscape scheme which shows how the area of park land surrounding the new leisure centre might be improved over the next 3 to 5 years. These plans are intended to provide a context for landscaping works associated with the new leisure centre.
The impressive designs include a brand new children’s play area, new pathways and walking routes, an illuminated footpath around the leisure centre, new trees and plants and improved grass areas that will help to add definition and shape to the look of the park.
A brand new civic space is being proposed for use by the annual Gala and other community events, while the existing Gala space will benefit from improved landscaping. Local people are also being asked for their opinions on bringing back a putting green to Woodhead Park.
Once complete local people will benefit from an improved overall appearance and beautiful landscaped gardens, while children will have access to brand new play facilities and improved adventure area. And, plans for a programme of active management for the existing trees and ornamental gardens will make sure that they have a long life.
Councillor Rhondda Geekie, KI Board member and Local Councillor for the park area, is confident that the design of the new park will be a great advantage for the local community:
“I’m really impressed by the proposed plans for Woodhead Park. Not only will this be a peaceful and attractive haven for local people to enjoy, but children will also be able to enjoy the new play facilities in a safe and relaxed environment.”
As part of KI’s commitment to listening to the community, local owners and occupiers of all residential property within a 300-metre radius of the park, will be sent consultation packs with a letter from their local councillor and questionnaire so they can express their views.
Residents who live out with this area but would like to register their interest, can do so by picking up a questionnaire from the William Patrick Library or Tom Johnston House.
Duncan Hamilton, project director for Kirkintilloch’s Initiative is keen to hear the views of the residents:
“The current plans for the park area will really help to benefit the local community. We understand that a major change like this will attract a range of opinions from residents living nearby, which is why we are eager to hear their views. Woodhead Park is a focal point in the town, so it is important that we are made aware of any concerns or ideas that members of the public may have about the plans.”
Consultation packs have been issued to residents this week.
