Monday 7 April to Friday 11 April - This week the Kirkintilloch Herald’s front page headline highlights local peoples’ concerns about the loss of trees associated with developments which have started recently. I think most concern has been expressed about the work at the site of the former Woodilee Hospital but the KI projects at the Integrated Care Centre and the Kirkintilloch Link Road were also mentioned in the article. As far as the KI projects are concerned there has been extensive consultation with the public authorities regarding the loss of trees on KI projects. The general approach taken by KI is to recognise that the unavoidable loss of trees must be mitigated to a level which ensures that, in the medium and long term, the net effect of the developments is positive. In the vicinity of the Link Road five new trees will be provided for every one which is unavoidably lost. These trees will be divided between the new road and other locations up to 2 km from the road where landowners consent can be gained. This approach will ensure that the Kirkintilloch area as a whole is a net winner as far as the number of trees is concerned.
