Kirkintilloch Link Road

Monday 18 February to Friday 22 February - Working towards getting the award of the construction contract for the Link Road continues to dominate the workload at the moment. Various meetings have taken place to deal with the outstanding planning issues, land issues and to programme the works on the assumption that all of the necessary consents will become available shortly. The tree and Japanese Knotweed removal works are now well advanced. We have had quite a number of telephone calls to this office from people who are concerned about the loss of trees. Whilst any loss of trees is unfortunate it is an inevitable consequence of building a major civil engineering project such as a road. I have been able to assure callers that everything possible is being done to minimise the numbers of trees lost and for each one removed up to another 5 will be planted. Before any work was done on site our environmental consultants walked the site with our engineers. Every tree was inspected and the engineers had to fully justify any removal on the basis that it is essential to be able to build the works. A similar exercise was carried out in relation to trees affected by Japanese Knotweed. This approach ensures that as many trees as possible will remain and of course substantial replacement tree planting is included in the road contract.
