Canal Festival

Posted on 26 Aug 2007

It has been a hectic week preparing for the first public access to the KI Project Office. The Kirkintilloch Canal Festival has grown into a popular annual event for the town attracting between 10,000 and 15,000 visitors. During the day of the Festival the Project Offices became the focus for the “Steps to the Future” themed area. As well as the KI Offices and display area there were stalls outside the offices providing information for the public about the Lennoxtown Initiative, Twechar Regeneration, Community Planning, Community Woodlands, Access for Pedestrians and Cyclists and the work of British Waterways. The display area in the Project Office was very popular. Sandra and I were kept busy talking to visitors from around 1.00pm until the festival started to pack up around 5.00pm. It was great to be able to speak directly to the people of the area about the KI plans. Many people were unaware of the range of the proposals. It was difficult to say what generated most interest but I think the Southbank Marina has captured people’s imagination at the moment mainly because it is already under construction.
