Leisure Centre

Construction of the Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre has progressed well. There have been a couple of relatively small issues which have had an impact on the construction programme but these are not expected to have significant cost implications. The most significant of these has been a delay in getting mains power to the building from the supplier, Scottish Power. This, in turn, has affected the programme for a number of the internal works which require a stable temperature within the building. Despite these issues we remain well ahead of the original programme which anticipated the new Centre opening in Autumn 2007. On 21 March 2007 the keys to the building were ceremonially handed from KI to East Dunbartonshire Council. This allows the Council to access the building to start some of the internal fit out works which they are responsible for. The Main Contractor, Barr Construction, will continue to work in the building until around late April. We are getting a lot closer now to being able to announce a date when the building will open to the public and the number of uncertainties is gradually reducing. Once Barr is finished its work, the Council (as operator) need full access to complete their internal fit out of areas such as the fitness suite and cafe area. There will then follow a period of staff training and familiarisation with the operation and systems within the building. In addition, the building cannot open until all of the agreed external works associated with access are completed. As soon as there is greater certainty on the completion of these issues an opening date will be announced by East Dunbartonshire Council.
